Natural stone, brick, and pavers offer abundant choices for creating intimate and enduring outdoor spaces.

Selection of materials is often based on existing site elements and architecture, and the overall characteristics of the property. The design and materials need to befit the setting:

  • The use of irregular flagstone creates a more informal appearance.
  • The geometric shapes of cut flagstone are more suited to a formal design.
  • Pavers offer many color and pattern choices and design options are limitless.
  • Pavers installed in a herringbone or running bond pattern is a more traditional look.
  • A tumbled cobble style paver in a random pattern offers a more rustic look and feel.

I do not begin the design until I feel like I understand the owner's style preference. Does the owner want formal or informal, organic and free flowing lines or more geometric. I consider the size required, is it to scale with the residence. Careful use of contrasting elements can be good, you don't want to over use one particular material.
