McLean Fireplace and Steps
This McLean family with three young children wanted to remove the existing water feature and create access to the upper terrace of the lawn. Important to the homeowners was increasing the outdoor entertaining area, increasing usable lawn, and making a more "kid-friendly" environment. A set of flagstone steps to match the existing wall replaced the water feature. A beautiful patio, seat walls, and fireplace were built on the upper corner of the newly expanded lawn to create a cozy retreat.
River Creek Town House
This River Creek end unit townhouse has an open view of the golf course and Potomac River. The homeowners wanted access to the back yard with a low maintenance landscape that blended into the surroundings and was to scale with the generous home. Large, natural quarried boulder steps ranging in sizes provided the perfect weight and proportion to lead from the front down to the rear patio and yard. The mix of grasses, perennials, and shrubs enhance the natural charm of the stonework.
Reston Back Patio
This Reston family wanted to create a more relaxed entertaining area in their backyard. After removing the outdated deck, it gave us a chance to create a 500 sq. ft Pennsylvania Bluestone Flagstone Patio over a reinforced concrete foundation. Leading from the backdoor are a set of semi-circular steps that are flanked by a 4' high planter wall for seasonal plantings. Framing the patios edge is a set of 18" high raised seat walls. Additional plantings surrounding the patio will enhance the outdoor environment while complimenting the stonework.
Falls Church Woodland Retreat
The heavily wooded lot served as the inspiration for this design. The clients wanted to keep the naturalistic, rustic feel while creating more easily accessible and usable entertainment space. This was achieved by enhancing the lot's slope with a curvilinear retaining wall and using heavy boulders as stepping stones. The woodland feel was further achieved by using a mix of shade tolerant and deer resistant plants. The center spotlight is a cut bluestone flagstone patio accessed from both the deck and boulder steps.
