Curing the Winter Garden Blues
By Kyle Thurman Environmental Enhancements, Inc.

Contrary to popular belief, in the winter season, Landscape Designers and Contractors do not pack up and move south for the winter. We are all steadily slowing down from the previous planting seasons, organizing our back log for upcoming work and refreshing our palettes for an exciting spring season.

If you have plans to renovate an existing garden next spring, or start a new one from scratch, remember that now is a great time to begin. By planning ahead, you can get a jump start on your project and have the entire summer to enjoy your new surroundings.

Winter is not only a good time to plan, but with the majority of the trees and shrubs being bare, you can step back and decide which areas could use a punch of winter interest. There are several shrubs that really pack a punch against a snowy or evergreen backdrop. A couple of my favorites are the Ilex verticillata (American Winterberry) and the Cornus alba (Redtwig Dogwood). Not only will they add multiple seasons of enjoyment to your garden, they also can be used for indoor holiday decorations.

So after we have all survived the holiday rush, and cabin fever sets in, the winter season is a perfect time to call us for you initial consultation and site survey. We can then start creating the plans that will become your perfect garden throughout the year.

Your suggestions and design really drew our interest. We had so many possibilities from which to choose, and you even asked for our ideas.
